Hi! Welcome to second day of Lawnya Vawnya 14! Check me (this newsletter) out daily for show highlights and some other fun LV related stuff!!!
GRAVY | BREAD CLIP | NEEDLE CRAFTS | TAUPE | URA STAR & FIREBALL KID
FIRST SHOW - GOWER ST UNITED - WEDS EVE
LV transformed Gower St United on Weds eve so that it felt kind of like an 80s prom (vibey lighting and decorations), but with a bar, which was nice. The show’s host Gravy, a pink-haired vision in zebra print and ribbons, kicked it off with glam ease, joking that all of the bands had better drag names than hers.
First up in bands: Bread Clip! A sweet and edgy power pop quartet of teenagers with great stage presence and banter, who brought fresh and fun pop songs full of energy and an occasional moody slow vibe. They did a shout out to Mrs (Mara) Pellerin, their teacher! Bless. Very cool songs also. Next was Needle Crafts, a pop punk band with dynamic range matching acts like Hop Along, and occasional three-part vocals. They announced that this would be their last show, which is a bummer, but it made the performance even more memorable. Lead singer Elsa imparted inspiring words: Coming to shows is a form of resistance. Free Palestine. Let’s Rock!
Taupe had a Deerhoof-sounding thing going, with mesmerizing high harmonies and super locked in polyrhythms. Gravy did an iconic mashup performance of “Welcome to the Rock” and “Welcome to my Island”. Ura Star & Fireball Kid , a bff duo-lead 4 piece, closed the show with possibly the most fun set I’ve ever seen in my life. Are there words? Pitch perfect pop songs about love, friendship, and partying! Writhing on floor together! Total hits like one called: Let’s fuckin go! It was giving sweaty, extremely musically talented Burt and Ernie. Great times all around.
